Beast 2024 Seminar at UMN (Doc. UMN)

Tangerang – On (15/11/2024) The UMN Film study program held a general class with Ronny Gani, the Co-Founder of Bengkel Animasi and Kawi Animation, and Armas Darmawan as Founder & CEO at Aras Design & Motion. This seminar is intended for students to know how to organize their careers, especially in animation.

There are various career fields in the movie industry, so students need to know what they are interested in and where their passion lies. Ronny presented the first session and talked about the animation industry in Indonesia.

“Before you enter the animation industry, you must know what field you want to work in, the company, and what projects the company does. All of this must be prepared from now on,” Ronny said.

According to Ronny, preparing a demo reel is one of the most important things. A demo reel is a short piece or video that shows the work that has been made. It is usually found in creative industries such as animation. 

“Demo reel is important in the career world besides a CV and cover letter. This demo reel is useful to show your skills, and depending on what part you like, emphasize your skills in the demo reel and try to make the demo reel show the skills that are in demand. The demo reel must be self-explanatory,” continued Ronny.

Ronny advised students not to use other people’s work for the demo reel. According to Ronny, even though it is forbidden, it often happens in the animation industry. In addition, the animation industry in Indonesia is still small.

Armas continued the next session. In this session, he discussed how the animation industry works. Armas explained that the animation industry involves many people, from pre-production and production to completion. 

“The university period is important for you to see in which area you do best; the more specific (your specialty), the better. In where I am at, one person only focuses on one thing. A person cannot focus on many things as the results won’t be great,” Armas said.

For Armas, knowing our own specialty is very important. Learning more deeply and focusing on one field can be our branding, especially in the career world.

“If you have a specialty, people will look for you because of that. Filter your CV so the people who approach you know in which field you are passionate about,” Armas concluded.
