Tangerang, February 15, 2024 – Universitas Multimedia Nusantara (UMN) held a seminar discussing the steps to prevent sexual violence cases, namely by establishing healthy relationships. This seminar was held at UMN’s Lecture Hall and invited the Executive Director of the Pulih Foundation, Dian Indraswari, as the speaker.
The campus environment is one area that needs serious attention, especially in the context of sexual violence cases. According to data from the Ministry of Education and Culture, the most reported cases of sexual violence occur in the university environment. This highlights the importance of creating safe spaces and supporting safety for all campus residents, both students and academic staff.
Highlighting this, UMN Student Support, in collaboration with the UMN Task Force for the Prevention and Handling of Sexual Violence, took preventive steps by holding a seminar aimed at preventing cases of sexual violence on campus. This seminar was held under the topic “Creating a Safe Space on Campus with Healthy Relationships.”
In the seminar, Dian emphasized that it is important to build healthy relations in a relationship. She explained the indicators that distinguish healthy and unhealthy relationships, especially in the context of dating relationships. This effort was made so that students are more aware of the importance of recognizing and fighting for healthy relationships and being able to avoid relationships that have the potential to harm themselves.
The seminar specifically invited representatives from various campus organizations, including the Student Executive Board, Faculty Associations, Student Organizations/Clubs, and several other campus organizations. Through this seminar, the campus wants to educate campus activists to be aware of sexual violence behavior and prevent it from happening in organizational activities and the campus environment.
Intan Primadini, Chairperson of UMN’s Task Force for the Prevention and Handling of Sexual Violence (Doc. UMN)
“Our goal in holding this seminar is that we want to involve organizers, namely organizational leaders so that they can become agents of change,” said the Chairperson of the UMN Task Force for the Prevention and Handling of Sexual Violence, Intan Primadini. She added that with this seminar, it is hoped that organizational leaders can take real action to prevent sexual violence.
“First, they are expected not to become perpetrators of sexual violence themselves. Second, they can educate and spread awareness of the importance of healthy relationships among members of their organizations. Third, organizational leaders are also expected to be a reminder of the principles of healthy relationships within their scope of work. By implementing these three steps, it is hoped that a safe and comfortable space will be created in the UMN environment,” Intan explained.
This is also in line with what was said by one of the student support staff, Yanuar Lurisa Aldio. He hopes that fellow organizers can jointly create a safe space in UMN and learn more about the Task Force for the Prevention and Handling of Sexual Violence through this event. That way, the organizers can more responsively coordinate with the Task Force for the Prevention and Handling of Sexual Violence in taking preventive actions.
Through the seminar, an integrity pact was also signed as a real commitment from the organizations to participate in the prevention of sexual violence. This action is a firm stance in ensuring that every entity on campus has the responsibility to create an environment that is safe and free from sexual violence.
“We hope that in their leadership in this new period, representatives of campus organizations can include sexual violence prevention programs in their organization’s work agenda,” Intan continued. She said the Task Force for the Prevention and Handling of Sexual Violence is currently conferring with the Student Executive Board to gather suggestions and input from organizations under their auspices to plan programs that can be run together to prevent sexual violence.
“Prevention of sexual violence on campus is a shared responsibility. We need as much help as possible from the UMN academic community to make efforts in creating a save space in UMN.” Intan concluded.
