TANGERANG – Ultima Sonora (Ulson) won two Gold Medals in the 3rd International Bandung Choral Festival 2023 at Parahyangan Catholic University, Bandung, West Java, Saturday (11/11/23). The UMN student choir group entered the Top 4 in the “Folklore” category and the Top 5 in the “Mixed Choir” category.
The International Bandung Choral Festival is among the most prestigious international choir competitions and performances. At least nine countries participated in the event, including Indonesia, the Philippines, Malaysia, Cambodia, Thailand, the United States, Singapore, Sri Lanka and Austria.
“Our training process took about eight months. The challenge in this year’s competition process is that Ultima Sonora is open to all generations including AlumnUS, where we try as much as possible to organize the right training schedule, both for active student members and AlumnUS who are already working,” said Ultima Sonora Chairperson Amanda Queentana.

In this competition, Amanda said there were 28 singers from Ultima Sonora, one coach, and three officials who organized the smooth process of this activity. Ulson performed “Segalariak” by Josu Elberdin and “Wade in the Water” arr. Allen Koepke for the “Mixed Choir” category. Meanwhile, the song “Piso Surit” arr. Budi Susanto Yohanes and “Nyai Undang” arr. Raymon Kristiawan & Efrando Ufo were performed for the “Folklore” category.
Amanda, also a 2021 UMN VCD student, revealed the reason behind the selection of these songs. According to her, there is a match between the songs and Ulson’s voice color and technique.
She also said that the Manggala team from Ulson had strong power to sing these songs. Not only that but the artistry and choreography were also quite interesting, making it magical for the judges at the 2023 International Bandung Choral Festival.
“On behalf of Ultima Sonora’s Executive Board, I am grateful and proud of all our achievements. Seeing the many ups and downs in the process, the Manggala team deserves to be at this point. My message to my Ultima Sonora friends is to keep up the spirit in the process together and don’t forget to always sing from the heart,” Amanda said.
