In the world of education, especially in lectures, you often quote or cite from various sources for the needs of college assignments to theses. Citation is a quote that is an essential component in academic or scientific writing. This is related to the novelty of the paper and avoiding plagiarism.
In making the scientific work, do not commit plagiarism just because you have not or do not include the source of the information obtained. An essential thing in writing scientific papers is citation or quotation.
1. What is Plagiarism?
Plagiarism is the act of someone claiming someone else’s work as their own without giving credit to the original owner. This is not ethical behavior, especially in the academic world.
Plagiarism of other people’s work involves claiming ideas, works, or patents. One of the responsibilities of educational institutions that have libraries within them is to prevent plagiarism and ensure that the work disseminated is not the result of stealing.

2. Forms of Plagiarism
There are two types of plagiarism, namely:
- Online Plagiarism: refers to the act of someone claiming someone’s online work as their own. It is often found to be done by plagiarists in conducting online searches. It happens because of the easy access to unlimited digital information on the internet and is not balanced with the awareness of doing good academic writing.
- Auto Plagiarism: the act of someone claiming statements from various written works by not citing where the idea or statement came from.
3. Check for Plagiarism at The UMN Library
Checking plagiarism for journals and theses that have been made by utilizing the Turnitin service provided by the UMN Library. UMN academics can use the Turnitin service as follows:
- Utilizing the Turnitin service at the UMN Library using UMN-domain email, such as the student email.
- Fill out the Turnitin Check Form, then send the document you want to check on Turnitin by emailing [email protected] with the subject “NAME – TURNITIN CHECK.” Do not separate the document per CHAPTER to facilitate checking, and the checking results will be sent immediately.
- Plagiarism checking can be done more than once when the file has been revised by filling out the Turnitin Check Form. Then, email [email protected] with the subject “NAME – TURNITIN REVISION CHECK” and write a brief introduction in the body of the email.
- The Turnitin checking process on weekdays can immediately receive results and process during the UTS and UAS period, around 1-2 working days.
- In addition to the percentage of similarity or plagiarism, Turnitin will also be able to determine whether or not the information was taken from a website source, whether or not it was translated, and whether or not it was AI.
4. Tips to Avoid Plagiarism
1. Proper Citing and Quotation
Understand how to cite and include sources per scientific work guidelines. You can use reference manager tools (e.g., Mendeley).
2. Paraphrasing
Interpret the statement from the source in your own style and language. Of course, using sentences that are still in context.
3. Have Information Literacy Skills
This skill is vital to manage your various information and understand how to use information appropriately.
4. Use a Plagiarism Checker
Aims to determine the level of plagiarism in the written work created. You can utilize the Turnitin service from the UMN library for free.

So, what you need to understand is that citing sources is the ethics of writing scientific papers. The existence of citations in scientific writing is one way to show that the ideas or ideas in the report made have a solid scientific basis.
