TANGERANG – UMN Architecture Lecturer Rizki Tridamayanti Siregar and her team from MATRA Studio won first place in the Maruga Roundabout design competition by the South Tangerang City Government on Friday (30/9). They brought the design concept of “Blandongan Kota”, which will become the new icon of the Orchid City.
Rizki, the head of the MATRA Studio team, explained that the architecture of the Betawi Ora tribe and the Van Douglas Orchid flower inspired the “Blandongan Kota” design. This combination is the hallmark of South Tangerang City. Blandongan is the area in front of the houses of the Betawi Ora community in South Tangerang. This place serves to welcome guests and gather.
“The hope is that ‘Blandongan Kota’ will become a front area for where the city starts, a public space where people meet, interact with nature and get to know the culture and arts of the city of South Tangerang,” Rizki explained.

Not only purely aesthetic, but the form of “Blandongan Kota” also pays attention to environmental sustainability. This is applied in one part of the design, namely the Orchid Monument.
Rizki said the monument, which resembles a flower petal, can collect rainwater (rain catcher). Then, the rainwater will be redistributed for regional irrigation. In detail, the design of the “Blandongan Kota” consists of roundabout areas: the Orchid Monument, a city information center, an orchid garden and an open-air amphitheater; a river area: riverfront area and viewing deck; City Forest park area equipped with a jogging track, mini library, prayer room, skatepark and sculpture park.
“These three areas are connected with sky bridges that are pedestrian and cyclist friendly, without disturbing vehicle circulation,” Rizki said.
Rizki and her team were very enthusiastic and excited about this achievement. After competing with hundreds of participants in Indonesia, the “Blandongan Kota” design will proceed to stage development. Rizki said the process of building a new icon for South Tangerang City would be carried out in stages starting in 2023.
For information, MATRA Studio is an architectural company affiliated with Multimedia Nusantara University. The work on “Blandongan Kota” was carried out by the MATRA Studio team and fellow architects, including Rizki Tridamayanti Siregar, Yasser Hafizs, Sy. Hafizh Shahab, and Zulkifly Suradin.
