November 21, 2019TANGERANG – Indonesia is the second largest contributor of plastic waste in the world. This was conveyed by Sea Soldier Foundation Founder Nadine Chandrawinata in a talkshow of nusantara cultural festival at UMN Lecture Theatre on Thursday (7/11).
At the talkshow, Nadine said that all natural pollution activities carried out in Indonesia were also felt by the whole world. For example, the burning of forests at the time of land acquisition for oil palm plantations makes neighboring countries, Singapore and Malaysia, feel the impact, namely the smoke from the burning.
“Plastic was created to help everyday life and without the use of plastic it is the same as humans going back to the stone age. But what needs to be looked at is our policy. We have to stop using plastic with a single use system,” Nadine explained.
Nadine also said that the Government itself has tried to reduce plastic waste scattered in the oceans by implementing new technology in the form of ships that capture all plastic in the waters.
“Although the Government has tried to implement the technology, we must also be active in activities carried out by the Government to maintain environmental health in Indonesia,” Nadine continued.
On the same occasion, Former Volunteer WWF Wijayanto revealed that environmental conditions in Indonesia are currently relatively bad. Now, we can’t determine when the rainy and hot seasons begin.
“In the past the rainy season and dry season in Indonesia can be determined starting in what month. But at this time, we can no longer determine when the rainy season and summer begin,” said Wijayanto.
Furthermore, Wijayanto explained how plastic can threaten the extinction of animal and plant species.
“Plastic is one of the factors that causes many marine animals to become endangered. Did you know that the amount of plastic found in the body of fish is increasing?” explained Wijayanto.
This is due to fish that cannot distinguish which food and which is plastic. Plastics that have decomposed in the sea can also enter the body of fish through their respiratory system.
So, let’s break the habit of using plastic with a single-use system! By changing these habits, we can take care of our environment. (CKH/CRA)
