TANGERANG – Five students of the Architecture Study Program at Multimedia Nusantara University (UMN) won second place in the Gemilang 2023 Canvas Creativity competition. This brilliant innovation work event was organized by the Regional Planning and Development Agency (Badan Perencanaan dan Pembangunan Daerah/Bappeda). The five students are Adiva Khalila Syarief, Amanda Nicole, Helen Agustini, Gema Ibrahim Ahmada, and Pramudya Abimanyu. The students are guided by lecturers Dr. Indah Kartika Sari, S.T., M.Sc., Yuninda Mukty Ardyanny, S.T., M.Ars., Sylviana Mirahayu Ifani, S.T., M.T., and Rizki Tridamayanti Siregar, S.Pd, M.T.. The innovative craftwork presented was a lampshade made from bamboo and plastic waste. The winners were announced at Tigaraksa Square, Tangerang Regency, on Monday (11/10/2023).
In his remarks, the Head of Bappeda Tangerang Regency, Ujang Sudiarto, explained that the Gemilang Canvas competition is an innovation event that involves regional apparatus, the community, as well as students in Tangerang Regency.
It aims to explore creativity in creating innovations that benefit the community as part of the 391st anniversary of Tangerang Regency. The prize was a plaque and cash amounting to Rp7,500,000, which was divided between Armaning and students, and the plaque was handed over to the LPPM innovation section.

3 UMN Architecture lecturers, namely Indah, Yuninda, and Sylviana, realized the idea of bamboo lampshades combined with plastic waste processing. The result is a collaboration with the Tangerang Regency government to raise the creative industry of bamboo crafts as the identity of Tangerang Regency.
The complement to this work is the processing of plastic waste for the white part of the lampshade layer, made of plastic waste, which is the idea of UMN Architecture Study Program lecturer Rizki as an Architect in processing plastic waste. The results of processing plastic waste have been exhibited at the Jakarta Architecture Festival (JAF) 2023 with 5 students who were also involved in this competition.
This product innovation work involves a bamboo craftsman named Armaning from Ciakar Village, Panongan District, Tangerang Regency and the processing of plastic waste with the help of a third party, Wings and Mortier Id, which has a plastic press. Students are involved in processing plastic waste into reusable plastic sheets.

Lecturer and chief supervisor Indah Kartika Sari explained that Mr. Armaning’s involvement is a form of UMN’s service to the community to raise the community’s work. Then, it is developed with innovation from renewable ideas through collaboration with the Wings and Mortier Id industries. This is a form of connection between academics, industry, and society.
This bamboo lampshade product will later become an innovative decorative lighting product that can be marketed to hotels and restaurants and has the potential to be exported abroad. More preparation and adjusting must be done so that it can pass export standards and compete with other products.
“Haki (Copyright) of the product belongs to the craftsmen, where we as academics are also in the stage of helping the process of making a woven module book by Mr. Armaning so that the knowledge of bamboo weaving can continue to be preserved,” said Indah.

The role of lecturers involved in this competition is as initiators and companions of students from the process of meeting craftsmen, assisting in making products, accompanying students to interview competitions, to accompanying students during the announcement of the competition at Tigaraksa Square, Tangerang Regency.
Indah hopes that in the future, the students involved can participate in international competitions with the theme of product innovation. Future works will be connected to bamboo materials that are associated with architectural materials.
The five students are involved in processing plastic waste into plastic sheets that can be reused in bamboo lampshades, as well as making a presentation paper of the work that has been done and presenting it to the competition examiners.
“The process takes approximately a week from the delivery of the plastic waste, then washing and drying, and finally pressing,” said Group Leader Adiva Khalila Syarief.

During the presentation session, Adiva and her group had a few problems regarding technical and other regulations because they were only informed when they were already in the room. However, this did not distract the focus of the group, and the session went smoothly.
Adiva hopes that with this competition, we can raise Tangerang’s native artists, especially bamboo craftsmen, to be more appreciated and developed so that it can advance the creative industry of the community.
