TANGERANG – 20 UMN students have successfully passed the Indonesian International Student Mobility Awards (IISMA) 2023 program. They have the opportunity to study at various of the world’s best universities for 4-6 months after going through a rigorous selection process.
IISMA is one of the leading scholarship programs organized by the Indonesian Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology since 2021. Indonesian students also have the opportunity to gain cross-cultural learning and interaction experiences.
UMN’s Vice Chancellor for Relations and Cooperation, Prof. Dr. Muliawati G. Siswanto, M.Eng.Sc., expressed her pride in this achievement. Not only does it positively impact UMN students, but Muliawati also said that this program could open up opportunities for international cooperation.
“They make us proud and are extraordinary. Hopefully, next year there will be more [UMN students] participating in this program,” Muliawati said.

The number of UMN students who pass the IISMA program continues to increase yearly. Previously, UMN sent two students since the IISMA program was first held in 2021. However, in 2022, there was an increase of 18 UMN students who passed this program.
UMN Global Office Manager, Boby Arinto, S.E., M.M., said that UMN will continue to optimize the participation of its students in the IISMA program. He revealed that this commitment aligns with UMN’s vision to be part of a World Class University.
This year, UMN’s Global Office also facilitated briefings from the 2021 and 2022 IISMA Awardees to the 2023 IISMA Awardee candidates. The training ranged from how to write an effective self-essay to interview tips.
“The mentors [IISMA Awardees 2021 and 2022] are also willing to be contacted directly by students for advice,” Boby said.
Be Authentic and Prepare Yourself
UMN 2020 Strategic Communication student Joan Fanny Wijaya is one of 20 UMN students who passed the IISMA 2023. She has the opportunity to study at Osaka University, Japan, starting in mid-September.

Fanny revealed at least one thing that was the key to her success in the IISMA 2023 selection, namely being authentic. Therefore, she said it is important to recognize yourself first. Starting from understanding your strengths and weaknesses to your values. This can then be elaborated per IISMA’s vision and mission.
“When writing an essay, it is important to remember that this is not the time to brag about yourself and all your achievements. It’s more important to explain the process and how it has impacted your life,” Fanny explains.
Likewise, preparing yourself is one of the best efforts that can be made. This was expressed by UMN 2020 Physics Engineering student Nicholas Robert, who also passed the IISMA 2023 program.

Nicholas said that confidence will grow along with the preparation that has been done before. You can prepare yourself starting by improving your English language skills and researching basic questions related to the IISMA interview.
“English language skills are very important because my goal is to go to the University of British Columbia (UBC) as my first choice, or the University of Waterloo as my second choice, and both are in Canada,” Nicholas said.
