Tangerang – On Wednesday (19/02/2025), Universitas Multimedia Nusantara received a visit from the Ethiopian Press Council. During this visit, UMN and the Press Council discussed opportunities for cooperation that could be carried out together and in joint discussions. The meeting was attended by the UMN Rector, the Faculty of Communication Sciences, and the Ethiopian Press Council.
The development of technology today makes it easier for people to get information from anywhere. Media disruption and news disinformation are concerns not only in Indonesian society but also in various international media, including Ethiopia’s. UMN’s meeting with the Ethiopian Press Council also discussed journalism and media today.
“There are so many changes in the media today, so UMN often discusses the future of the media and its sustainability. Plus, nowadays, people depend on social media and are not concerned with the source of information, which we are very worried about. UMN itself is under the auspices of the Kompas Group, so journalism is a very strong and important program in UMN,” Dr. Andrey Andoko, the UMN Rector, said.
In this meeting, Andrey hopes to expand and strengthen the cooperation between UMN and the Ethiopian Press Council. This is not only academic but also in terms of sustainable cooperation, from media and knowledge exchange, so that UMN can learn from both countries.
“We don’t have a school that studies media there, so we want to collaborate with UMN in the media field, especially academically. I hope this collaboration can be sustainable and useful for all of us, and many ideas can be included,” Ranga Kalansooriya, IMS International Media Support Advisor, said.
Continuing this discussion, Tamerat Hailu, Executive Board Member of the Ethiopian Media Council, said that we live in a rapidly developing technology and adapt continuously. However, according to Tamerat, journalism is becoming less popular. For Tamerat, this is because the image of the media and its landscape has changed.
“We have several strategies and potential collaborations for the future. UMN can create student mobility for Ethiopian students to study at UMN and take short courses to gain experience. We also initiated cooperation for lecturers, namely participating in guest lectures and conducting joint research from both sides of Indonesia and Ethiopia,” Dr. Friska Natalia, UMN Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs, said.
This meeting was followed by a discussion with the Head of the Journalism and Communication Studies Program, discussing current media and digital journalism learning strategies. It is hoped that this discussion can be carried out soon and can continue to develop new strategies for academics.
