Tangerang – On (04/12/2024), Universitas Multimedia Nusantara and the Tzu Chi Foundation held a waste sorting workshop at the Tangerang Waste Depot. This workshop invites UMN students to participate in the waste selection and seminars on waste.
In some areas of Indonesia, landfills still pile up and are not categorized according to waste. In addition, Indonesia still lacks education about waste sorting. This time, UMN, together with Tzu Chi, held the workshop to educate students and give them insight into proper waste management.
“We often hold this activity at other Waste Depots, and we want to continue to educate the public about proper waste management. Waste is different, not only organic, inorganic and B3. Even plastic waste is still differentiated and has its own category”, said Lin Chung Meng, the person in charge of the Serpong Region.
For Lin, the Earth humans live on is already sick because it has been experiencing global warming for the past 10 years. Lin gave several examples, such as the many disasters, extreme weather, and disasters caused by human actions themselves.
“If waste continues accumulating in landfills, it can produce harmful gases. That’s why many landfills have exploded; the pile of garbage has been there for too long. We do this per Tzu Chi’s vision and mission to make society harmonious, so that people can avoid human disasters,” Lin continued.
In this seminar, Lin also gave some tips for waste management, such as managing organic waste from households into eco enzymes, recycling plastic waste, and more.
“Since the Covid Pandemic, the waste has increased, and from here, we follow the master’s word to manage this, so we approach the community in several places such as Tangerang, Pluit, PIK, Pesanggrahan, and other areas in Jabodetabek,” Lin said.
Lin hopes that more people will know about proper waste management, both organic and inorganic waste. In addition, Lin hopes that people will care more about the environment and be wise in using anything.
“I hope more people are educated and know about Tzu Chi so they can join Tzu Chi. This is so we can have a good social impact,” Lin concluded.
