Score distribution of student’s SDG literacy (Doc. UMN)
Recognizing the importance of integrating the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into all campus activities, we also make efforts to understand how well our students grasp these critical sustainability concepts. By measuring their level of sustainability literacy, we can ensure that students not only become familiar with the SDGs but also actively apply them in their academic work and daily lives.
To assess this understanding, we developed a survey that evaluates students’ awareness of the SDGs. This quiz helps gauge their knowledge, engagement, and ability to incorporate sustainable practices into their routines. By making this tool easily accessible through our in-house student app, UNION, students can quickly access the quiz and reflect on their sustainability knowledge.
Using UNION as a platform ensures that students can engage with the quiz conveniently, anytime and anywhere. This initiative serves as both an educational tool and a way for students to take ownership of their sustainability journey, reinforcing our commitment to fostering a generation of individuals who are not just aware of the SDGs, but are equipped to make a meaningful impact in the world.
The results from the SDG literacy test show a fairly strong understanding of sustainability issues among students, with a majority scoring in the moderate to high range (80-90). While this indicates that many students have a solid grasp of the SDGs, there are still a notable number of students in the lower scoring categories, suggesting that some areas of awareness could be further improved.
In conclusion, the test results reflect a positive baseline of SDG literacy, but there is room for growth. With targeted efforts in increasing awareness and engagement in specific areas, more students can improve their understanding of the SDGs. This presents an opportunity for educational initiatives to continue strengthening students’ knowledge and commitment to sustainability.
