January 3, 2024Tangerang – Fostering meaningful dialogue around the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is central to UMN’s mission of creating global impact. By hosting and engaging in conferences, workshops, and strategic partnerships, UMN brings together diverse voices from government, NGOs, academia, and the private sector to address pressing global challenges. Here are several events when we had cross-sectoral dialogue about the SDGs throughout 2023.
Participation in the Conference of the Parties (COP) in Dubai, UAE.
UMN’s commitment to SDGs was exemplified on December 5, 2023, when UMN’s Maria Advenita presented at the Uzbekistan Pavilion at COP 28. In her discussion, “Journalism in the Era of Triple Planetary Crisis,” Maria highlighted the vital role of journalism in addressing the interconnected crises of climate change, biodiversity loss, and environmental degradation. Attended by representatives from the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) and the Earth Journalism Network, the panel underscored the need for responsible journalism to bridge the gap between scientific research and the broader public, making complex environmental issues understandable and urgent for all.
Maria emphasized how journalists play a critical role as communicators between researchers, policymakers, and communities. By making scientific data accessible to diverse audiences and spotlighting environmental issues, journalists can turn environmental challenges into shared societal concerns, fostering greater collective action.
Maria’s involvement at COP 28 also opens doors for future collaborations, strengthening UMN’s connections with influential organizations like UNCCD and the Earth Journalism Network. This participation reinforces UMN’s role as an active contributor to SDG-related initiatives, paving the way for continued partnerships that will help drive sustainable change across sectors and borders.
