Tangerang – Maria Advenita Gita Elmada, S.Kom., M.Kom., had the opportunity to speak at the Conference on Social Responsibility and Sustainable Business in Malaysia. This event was held on (05/10), in Putrajaya, Malaysia.
The ICSR 2024 Conference raised the theme “Local Solutions to Global Challenges: Communicating Sustainability Initiatives to Diverse Communities” and focused on effectively communicating sustainability to address global challenges.
“This conference emphasizes the importance of balancing global sustainability standards and the needs of local communities with an exploration of the role of communication, ethics, and technology in supporting sustainability,” Vita explained.
Vita also provided insights based on her recent research with fellow UMN Communication Science lecturer Angga Ariestya, S.Sos., M.Si. In their study, Vita and Angga discussed “Director-Led Sustainability Communication in Companies: A Content Analysis of Director Forewords in SRI-KEHATI Indexed Companies’ 2023 Sustainability Reports”.
“This research identifies that many companies are still focused on business and financial strategies, with varying degrees of sustainability integration. I want the public to understand that leadership has an important role in shaping a strong and effective sustainability narrative so that companies can improve their communication strategies to be more aligned with ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) principles,” Vita continued.
In addition, the research conducted by Vita and Angga focused on strategic communication reports on corporate sustainability by analyzing 26 reports from companies included in the SRI-Kehati index.
“We took several main themes such as compliance, business orientation, and systemic approach using the Landrum framework. This research provides insight into how companies can align financial goals with social and environmental responsibility,” Vita continued.
Vita hopes this research can encourage businesses to adopt a more comprehensive and integrative approach to sustainable communications. Vita added that business stakeholders can strengthen the sustainability narrative and commit more to achieving sustainability in all operations.
