UMN Computer Engineering Successfully Obtains International Grant Funds from the IEEE (Doc. LPPM UMN)

Tangerang – On January 3, 2024, UMN Lecturers and Students majoring in Computer Engineering succeeded in obtaining the EPICS International Community Service Grant Fund organized by IEEE. This achievement is a collaboration with Lecturers and Students of the Department of Plant Pests and Diseases, Faculty of Agriculture, UGM.

The use of technology today has become a massive phenomenon in various sectors of life. This advancement not only includes the use of the latest hardware and software but also involves the application of technological solutions to overcome various challenges and needs in society and the environment.

Universitas Multimedia Nusantara (UMN) Computer Engineering is trying to answer this challenge. Through their participation in the Engineering Projects in Community Service (EPICS) program held by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), Computer Engineering Lecturers and Students won the program and received a grant of 5300 USD. 

This success cannot be separated from the close collaboration between UMN and the Department of Plant Pests and Diseases, Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Gajah Mada (UGM), who jointly contributed to the competition.

“For us from the engineering field, we understand more about the technology. So, we need another point of view on agriculture so that this technology can be implemented directly according to the needs of the community, and this can be achieved by collaborating with students and lecturers from the Faculty of Agriculture UGM and Partners from the Paguyuban Mitra Turindo Farmer Group,” said Nabila Husna Shabrina, S.T., M.T., a lecturer in Computer Engineering as well as a coach in this project.

The EPICS program aims to allow students to implement technology projects that positively impact the community. In this competition, the UMN team, in collaboration with UGM, submitted a proposal entitled “An AIoT-powered Smart Agricultural System for Pests Forecasting and Management.” This proposal includes a combination of artificial intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things (IoT) to help predict and manage the spread of pests on salak farms.

There are nine UMN Computer Engineering students participating in this competition, students who are considered capable of contributing to this project. 

“Working on this proposal, we initially listed the outline of what we would discuss and compile. After that, we divided the tasks among each team member. After that, we checked the entire work to ensure the alignment of the discussion,” explained Indah Desri Wahyuni, one of the students involved in preparing the proposal.

Indah said that this proposal was done in a short time, only two weeks. Therefore, they tried to make time in between their busy lectures. Although it was difficult, she and her colleagues managed to overcome this obstacle.

The grant is planned to be disbursed in February, and the funds will be used to develop the project and purchase tools. By doing so, this project is hoped to benefit UMN, UGM, IEEE, and related partners.

Nabila added that this collaboration between UMN and UGM can open up opportunities for further cooperation. She also hopes this achievement can support UMN’s vision of becoming a World Class University.
