UMN’s Commitment to Meaningful Education: Empowering Students with Practical, SDG-Focused Learning Across the University
November 30, 2023Happy Sweet Seventeen! UMN Celebrates Its 17th Birthday
December 4, 2023COP 28 event held in Dubai, UAE (Doc. UMN).
As a green and sustainable campus, UMN continues to show its commitment to sustainability issues and is involved in related dialogs. This is demonstrated through the participation of one of the lecturers from UMN’s Communication Studies Program, Maria Advenita Gita Elmada, who had the opportunity to participate in the Climate Change Conference commonly known as the 28th COP in Dubai, organized by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), a UN convention for climate change.
Maria was the only Communication Science Lecturer from Indonesia who got the opportunity. Maria’s participation in the International Environmental Communication Association became Maria’s entry ticket to participate in the largest climate change conference, which this year was attended by nearly 70,000 participants from all over the world.
COP stands for Conference of the Parties, which refers to the annual meeting held by the UNFCCC. The main purpose of the COP is to discuss and coordinate global actions related to climate change. At this meeting, representatives from various member states of the Convention on Climate Change come together to evaluate progress in implementing their commitments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and address the impacts of climate change. In addition, the COP also serves as a platform for the negotiation of new treaties and agreements aimed at mitigating climate change.
COP 28 is a global event that is not only important but also has a tremendous impact on our efforts to deal with the climate change crisis. Through her participation in COP 28, Maria believes she can also contribute to the development of Tri Dharma at Multimedia Nusantara University while emphasizing UMN’s position as a Green and Sustainable Campus.

In the event, which runs from November 30 to December 12, 2023, Maria has the opportunity to network with environmental protection activists. She will also be able to share and present in COP 28’s side events related to science communication and communication for sustainable development, which she has been teaching at UMN.
Student involvement in climate action has been widely practiced at UMN. Maria will share this with the international community in the hope that more collaborations can be built to achieve sustainable development goals more quickly, especially those that focus on environmental protection.
