LEBAK – Alumni Relations of Multimedia Nusantara University (UMN) through KAMI UMN together with LPPM UMN provided assistance for radio communication devices as support for the Alert Radio Network Program in Panggarangan Village, South Lebak, Banten. Radio devices in the form of 4 units of dual-band HT radios and 8 units of single-band HT radios were handed over to the South Lebak Mitigation Group (Gugus Mitigasi Lebak Selatan/GMLS) on Wednesday (5/7/2023).
The mitigation group was created because the area in South Lebak is the center of natural disasters, such as the tsunami that occurred some time ago also the absence of supporting devices for disaster emergencies, so GMLS needs network support devices that have just been completed.
In the Tridharma of Higher Education, there is a point of Community Service which not only stops at lecturers and students but continues for UMN Alumni to contribute to the surrounding environment.
According to UMN External Student Affairs Manager Elfira F. Wahyono, this time, KAMI UMN, in KAMI PEDULI activities, chose the South Lebak Mitigation Cluster because it is preparing a program to be prepared for Tsunami. The selection of assistance in communication tools was selected to maximize communication for disaster mitigation.
“Because communication is very important and when a disaster occurs information can be conveyed quickly and more effectively,” said Elfira.
Head of the Community Service Bureau of LPPM UMN Andy Firmansyah added that the radio communication device assistance provided resulted from discussions with GMLS. Hopefully, this device will be helpful for residents and continue to work together further to support disaster response activities.

The radio sets provided were 4 units of dual-band Baofeng UV-5R (8W) HT radios and 8 units of single-band Baofeng BF-T9 HT radios.
GMLS Community Founder Anis Faisal Reza or familiarly called Abah Lala explained that the assistance from UMN is beneficial for mitigation activities and emergency response activities in the event of a disaster because this radio has a significant role in situations where the usual telecommunications network is cut off or blackout.
Ultimately, it takes time to socialize or communicate with the community when a disaster occurs. This HT radio device will be an example of good practice for the community.
“Although the technology is old school, it will be very important and can be used even when there is no disaster. When there is a disaster this will be a tool to communicate between the affected villages and the disaster response team on duty during a disaster,” said Abah Lala.
In addition to having an initial purpose for disaster communication, this HT radio device can be used under normal circumstances as a means for GMLS to disseminate important information to the community.
Abah Lala hopes that GMLS will have more members in the future to expand the spectrum of benefits to the community. Because talking about mitigation is not only talking about how to take shelter from earthquakes, evacuation and so on. But mitigation is more about how to build the readiness of each of us to answer natural challenges so that we are better prepared to face life.
